Your Skincare Questions Answered

Since we all want to make glowing and healthy-looking skin more accessible, we thought we’d ask our community of beauty lovers what they’d want to ask a Doctor/Medical Consultant.

We received so many INCREDIBLE questions, but here are the ones that were asked over and over again.

For someone new to skincare, what are some basic routines/products to try out?

“If you’re new to skincare, keep it simple and focus on building a solid foundation. Start with these key steps:
Cleanser: Choose a gentle, non-stripping cleanser that suits your skin type, whether it’s oily, dry, or combination.
Moisturiser: A lightweight, hydrating moisturiser helps maintain your skin’s moisture barrier. Look for ingredients like hyaluronic acid, glycerin, or ceramides.
Sunscreen: This is non-negotiable! Use a broad-spectrum SPF 30 or higher every day, even when it’s cloudy. Sunscreen protects against premature ageing, pigmentation, and skin cancers.
As you get comfortable with these steps, you can start adding more active ingredients like vitamin C in the morning for brightening and retinol in the evening for cell turnover.” - Dr. Ejikeme

What is the best way to remove makeup from your skin?

“The best way to remove makeup is by cleansing. Cleanse as many times as needed till the water runs clear. Start with an oil-based cleanser or a gentle micellar water to break down the makeup, including waterproof formulas. This ensures you’re lifting off all the dirt, excess oil, and impurities without stripping your skin. Follow up with a water-based cleanser that suits your skin type to cleanse deeper into the pores. This two-step process helps maintain your skin barrier while ensuring your skin is thoroughly clean, which is crucial for maintaining healthy, glowing skin.” - Dr. Ejikeme

What is the difference between BHA and AHA, and which should I be using?

“BHA (Beta Hydroxy Acid) and AHA (Alpha Hydroxy Acid) are both exfoliants but work slightly differently.
AHAs like glycolic acid and lactic acid are water-soluble and work on the surface of the skin. They help with exfoliation, improving skin texture, brightening, and addressing fine lines. They’re great for normal to dry skin types and for those looking to target pigmentation or sun damage.
BHAs, like salicylic acid, are oil-soluble, which means they can penetrate deeper into the pores, making them excellent for oily or acne-prone skin. BHAs help unclog pores, reduce inflammation, and control breakouts.
Choosing between them depends on your skin type and concerns. If you have acne or oily skin, BHAs might be more beneficial. For dry or sensitive skin, AHAs such as lactic acid might be a better fit.
You can also incorporate both but alternate their use to avoid irritation. Always follow up with sunscreen when using acids in your routine.” - Dr. Ejikeme
