Trinny Woodall: from founding a global beauty brand to her youth-boosting skincare tip

TV’s Trinny Woodall launched her eponymous brand Trinny London in 2017, starting with stackable pots of multi-purpose make-up. Since then the brand has since expanded into skincare and tools and is now a multi-million pound business with a global community.

We caught up with Trinny - whose Lip2Cheek is featured in the limited edition Female Founders Edit -  to find out what makes a successful beauty boss…

What is the story behind starting Trinny London?

I spent 20 years going all around the world making women up and the question that I was most asked was “What colours suit me?”. The first thing that a woman can accept in herself in a makeover is a change in her make-up – I realised then the impact you could have by switching up make-up and the idea for Trinny London was born from the inspiration of these women. I wanted to offer portable, personalised make-up that was joyful, effortless and inspiring.

What inspired Lip2Cheek?

I wanted something really easy to apply and that you could do anywhere, and I wanted it to be in shades that were foolproof yet brought a pop of colour to your lips and cheeks.

Why did you choose this particular shade to go into the box?

Because it’s our customers' most popular shade and universal flattering for every skin tone. We love to match people’s make-up through a combination of lip, cheek and eye, suits everyone.

When recommending this product to your best friend, what would you tell them?

It’s got great colour payoff, it lasts all day and the shades are very flattering.

What top tip (beauty related or not) would you give to your younger self?

Always wear SPF50, and 99% of whatever you worry about never happens.

How will you be celebrating International Women’s Day this year?

I hopefully will be in Ireland where we are expanding Trinny London into Brown Thomas and celebrating international women’s day with a dinner for 300 entrepreneurial women.

Why was it important to you to be included in the Female Founders Edit?

I think it’s incredibly important to celebrate female entrepreneurship and to help to address the balance of the stat that only 2% of funding last year went into female founded businesses.

Who is your female role model?

My role model who is dead is Amelia Earhart, who flew the world fearlessly. Alive, my role models are the entrepreneurs who have helped me through my journey like Chrissie Rucker, who founded The White Company and built it into the multi-million pound brand it is today.

What’s the best piece of business advice you’ve ever been given?

From day one, think of your brand globally.

What is your number one youth-boosting skincare tip?

Stimulate your skin with facial massage before you begin your skincare routine.

Is there one make-up item that instantly makes you feel more confident?

Blusher.
